Akiiki (meaning ‘friend’)is Angel’s first cafe/gallery space and it’s more than a project for the owners;it’s a passion. Taking what was previously a more run-of-the-mill healthy eatery, the longtime friends and more recent business partners, have moulded something rather more special.
The simple concept is good wholesome food in a calm and ethically responsible setting – the food is a melting pot of influences, mostly veggie and organic where possible. The unique element being that you can also view provocative, counter-culture art here(Goldie, Jamie Reid and Mau Mau are part of the first showing),as well as local artists work, whilst enjoying the community feel that Akiiki is helping to create.
The cafe is formed of a large, long room which will also host events and no doubt attract the discerning element of the college opposite with it’s retro video games and laid back vibe. A connected space forms the majority of the seating area, and very comfortable it is too; with modern antiques, and second-hand furniture(much of it donated by one of the owners). With lots of wood, greenery and natural colours, it is a very relaxing place to be.
The food thankfully lives up to the décor and you can enjoy homemade delights such as falafel, hummous, soups, and a particularly gorgeous pumpkin dip to go with the bread that is made on site. The highlight of the menu was some exceptional spicy lamb meatballs. Prices are generally on the right side of a fiver and good value. The quality of the ingredients and the friendly yet cultured atmosphere ensure that when you eventually leave this little oasis amidst the grimy chic of Angel you will feel that little bit better about life… and you will be sure to return!
