After reading your review below of Le Petit Futé we decided to try
out the restaurant PAPILLON in the very pretty village of St Fraimbault in
southern Normandy.

We first went there end of March 2008 (Easter – so the
season had just started). Wow! What a great surprise. Classical,
traditional, quality French food, not too posh and not too fussy, but
delicious and tasty and made with lots of fresh local produce. Would
expect this sort of food in a city, not in the middle of the countryside.
Food cooked by Gregoire the French chef (with 27 years of cheffing
experience behind him – 16 years of which were in top notch kitchens in
London) and served by his English wife Rachel (or their French waitresses
in the summer). You have to book during the season. A must for all
visitors to Normandy who are searching for that hidden and oft-thought
long lost French gastronomic experience that doesn’t bleed your purse dry!
Not downmarket by any stretch of the imagination and very cosy and pretty
in style, as well as being great value. The review below is in French
but basically says what I am saying. Try it out – it is SO worth it …

Etablissement estampillé Label Normandie Qualité Tourisme. Un endroit
inattendu à Saint-Fraimbault. et c’est tant mieux car la surprise n’en est
que plus agréable. Grégoire Charles, cuisinier de son état, après avoir
longtemps travaillé à Londres a eu le coup de cour pour le village et a
décidé d’y apporter sa touche personnelle. Papillon, c’est à la fois un
resto, un salon de thé et une épicerie fine. Le fil conducteur, outre le
papillon – petite citations à l’appui -, c’est de mêler habilement local
et international avec pour mot d’ordre la qualité. Côté cuisine, celle-ci
évolue au gré des saisons et des envies du chef. Le terroir y côtoie les
saveurs d’ailleurs, de quoi vous donner des envies de voyages. La salle de
resto aux pierres et briques apparentes est rustique, chic et
accueillante. Côté épicerie fine, dans le même esprit que la table on
retrouve des produits locaux ainsi que du bio. Dès que tea time arrive,
vous avez rendez-vous avec Rachel – Mme Charles en l’occurrence – et son
accent so british : excellente sélection de thés et de cafés accompagnés
de pâtisseries maisons. On n’a qu’une envie : y rester plus que le temps d’un
