Kate Morrison reviews Canal Station, Paisley, PA1 2HF
My friend and I visited the new bar and restaurant Canal Station
in Paisley this weekend, and had such a good time that I felt the need to
let people know about it. It’s just a couple of minutes walk from Canal
Street train station where the old Platform 1 was.
There’s a good sized bar area featuring a very long and well stocked bar
which has a nice selection of wines. On one side of the bar you can go
through to the little snug area which would be really nice for private
functions whereas the other side takes you through to the restaurant,
conservatory and outdoors to the beer garden which is a good size and I
imagine it would be a bit of a suntrap. although it’s unlikely that we’re
going to see anymore sun this year!
There are lots of comfy sofas around at the bar, upon which my friend and
I plonked ourselves down on while we sipped on our cocktails –
Cosmopolitans being our tipple of choice a la Carrie and co. Being
naturally nosey, I also noticed a flyer promoting 2 for 1 cocktails on
Thursday nights from 5-8pm – so guess where I’ll be after work next
Thursday! We were feeling a bit on the peckish side so we decided to order
some snacks from the Small Dishes menu – 3 tapas dishes for £10 which I
thought was quite good value. We tried the Spicy Spanish Sausage, Spanish
Black Pudding and the Garlic and Chilli Mushrooms, all of which were
generous in size and delicious.
Overall I was really impressed with Canal Station’s lovely décor, friendly
staff and great food. The tapas dishes gave me a taste of what to expect
from the restaurant so I’ll definitely be booking a table very soon!

I Have visited your restraunt on two occasions one being Mothers Day and the most recent Sunday 17th May 2009, only to turned away on mothers day as we had not booked, however the restraunt was half enpty and we were told no bar food would be served as we sat finishing our drinks several other couples were also turned away, which I find amazing especially under the present financial climate surely every customer is welcome. we left and went to the Craig Dhu who were only to happy to serve us.
This also happened again this Sunday when we again were told the kitchen was too busy and could not take our order again we left and went to the Craig Dhu, I find this quite bizar as there are posters advertising future events, surley sufficient staff should be employed to deal with the demand. My friends and I have been regular customers of this Bar/Restraunt over the last few owners and the one thing that has never changed is the service it has always been really poor, Hopefully this will improve in the near future.
Have just eaten at this ‘restaurant’ earlier this evening. Christmas Menu. It was dreadful. I had prawn cocktail as starter – it was nice – not much you can do to mess up this. However, my main was just awful. I had chosen to have turkey. Now I know that we can’t expect michelin star food at a christmas lunch – but what we can expect is something decent.
The Turkey – if you could have called it that – was obviously of the -‘reformed meat mixed with what’ kind. Okay if it good quality you can maybe get away with this on a cheap sandwich. It was rubbery, tasteless and looked and smelled dubious. Needless one small mouthful was enough. The Stuffing was of the sliced of a round variety. soggy frozen veg. I paid £17 for this.
I just hope that any family or group who have booked for Christmas Day get what was advertised on the menu. I won’t be back.
I went to Canal Station for a works xmas dinner on 10 December. The food was nice and well presented. I had turkey for the main course, it was typical xmas lunch for a bar/diner. The rest of the food ordered was fine, every one had a good evening. I had such a nice time that I took my family back on xmas day. Again, the food was nice and we had a fun xmas dinner without the uaual argument over who was doing the dishes!! We have been to canal station on several occasions and have always had a pleasant meal, the chocolate fudge cake is particularly delicious.
