Andaz Hotel, Liverpool Street, London | Luxury Hotel London

Andaz Liverpool Street London – Re-defining Luxury Hotel (formerly Gt Eastern Hotel)

A revolutionary new concept for the hotel industry, Andaz Liverpool St London is the first launch in the international Andaz line. Andaz is about personalised casual luxury – your own unique hotel experience. This launch will see traditional hotel service models turned on its head by fusing the best of contemporary boutique culture, with that of a five-star hotel.

Andaz Liverpool Street London - Re-defining Luxury

As such, Andaz is unlike any hotel experience. The check in desk, concierge, bell-boy – all the customary and conventional ‘symbols’ of hotels as we know them – have been omitted… along with all the complications and constraints. Instead, Andaz is committed to developing stronger guest/staff relations, by encouraging one-on-one relationships between guests and their Andaz host. Guests are empowered to define their own hotel experience and live it with the same freedoms they have at home.

The non-traditional, designed-focused living space is more like a home than a hotel. A dedicated “Andaz Host,” recognizes and responds to guests’ personal tastes and preference. A flexible and simplified method is applied as guests are checked-in via Tablet PC`s, either en route to the guest room, or upon arrival. All members of staff are guest serving, and without title, from general manager to waiter.

Pricing is uncomplicated, transparent and uniform. Inclusive in the room rate are traditional ‘extras’ such as breakfast, Internet, healthy mini-bar items, local telephone calls and unlimited movies.

The Hotel it is innovative, and yet straightforward. Imaginative public space concepts replace the traditional reception. Unexpected detail exists around the building. Historic architecture sits alongside modern design. Each Andaz develops cultural and design cues from the local area. The hotel’s personality, as much as product, is tailored towards what each guest responds to.

Andaz Liverpool Street London is eco-aware. Toilets use 80% less water, a computer controlled boiler reduces 25% fuel use, intelligent lighting systems used in guest rooms, eco printers used throughout, air miles a major consideration in sourcing food and beverage, infra -red detection in public toilet lighting and fair trade purchasing policy implemented.

Cultural interventions at Andaz Liverpool Street London include:

Bespoke monthly East End Contemporary Art tours from the hotel. Local and hard to find galleries and studios are uncovered by guides who are practicing artists.

Local characters and personalities have submitted iPod play lists. The individuals have been selected for local relevance over celebrity such as the local “policeman,” “lawyer,” “banker,” “publican,” “fashion designer,” “artist,” “architect,” “hairdresser.” The selections appear on loan iPods from the Living Space.

The hotel is a lynch pin between corporate and creative East London. Regular comedy (Sabotage) and literary (B-Club) events have played host to the likes of Stephen Merchant, Stuart Lee, Will Self, Nick Hornby and Alexi Sayle.

A new art collection is developing along guest corridors. Works by local, up coming artists include Petro Chrisostomou and Martina Schmuecker and curated by local art collective Exhibit-K.

A launch exhibition will see a selection of local creatives luminaries coming together to apply East End relevant quotations to the spaces of Andaz Liverpool Street, under the title of “Eastern Thinking”. Contributors include Paul Newman, Danny Sangra and Jonny Woo

Having been a regular patron of the Great Eastern Hotel, I have now stayed in its re-incarnation “Andaz” twice. The first time, the hotel was full, so my only option of a room was the somewhat demure “Queen Suite” – which didn’t even have a bath ! I found the new check-in procedures OK, if a little “Gimmicky” but there was not the usual sense of “Nothing is too much Trouble” which was one of the Great Eastern’s defining strengths.

I tried again a couple of nights ago – This time in a king suite (£376 inc. tax) – which is quite a handsome price – even in London. I had requested a smoking room – “Sorry this Room is not a smoking room and we have none available anyway”. I ordered a Mojito – and was served a weak Rum & Soda with a sprig – well more acurately a flop of old wilted mint – it was thoroghly awful. The Bed was not kingsize, the bedroom too hot, the lounge too cold, the healthy bar – water and a couple of juices, disappointing.

And what on earth have they done to the place ??

The Gugennheim inspired tundra now has pretentious writings adorning, as do the lifts’ ceilings ! It is cultural vandalism ! If this is what Hyatt brings to the party, they will not be getting my invite !

I feel this formerly Conran Hotel was one of the best I had have stayed in, whilst in its GEH guise, but the new “Hip” Andaz has left me with a bitter, and expensive taste in my mouth ! I need to find a new base in London !
