Welsh Butter, Salt and Miners

This month’s Which? magazine reveals why Welsh butter contains more salt than English or Scottish butter – it’s down to the miners!

When Which? researchers found that salt levels in Tesco standard butter on sale in Wales contained 3 per cent more salt that in the rest of the UK, we asked the retailer why. A spokesperson for Tesco told us, ‘Welsh recipes were traditionally high in salt to ensure that miners, who would sweat a lot underground, had enough salt’.

Tesco does sell low-salt varieties, so make sure you check the packet before you buy if you are looking to lower salt intake.

Which? celebrates its 50th anniversary on 7 October 2007 – look out for more information in the October issue of Which? magazine and online at www.which.co.uk
