The Brighton Coalition, Seaside Surprise
The Brighton Coalition
Seaside Surprise
I finally got sunburnt in England!
After many winter months longing for some warmth and a golden glow, I headed to the coast of Brighton and found more than I had bargained for. Yes, the crystal blue water sparkled under the glory of the sun, and yes tanned gorgeous bodies were out in full force – but the food!
After sunbathing all morning and leisurely strolling up and down the Brighton pier, my stomach started to rumble for some food. After having previously eaten some awful fish’n’chips the previous night, I wanted something light and fresh. I thought this would be quite difficult as the menus of most seaside cafes do not go beyond safe fish’n’chips.
By chance, I came across The Brighton Coalition. Situated right on the waterfront, with simple plastic chairs and simple beach-going diners, I did not expect much at all. Boy was I about to swallow my words!
The menu was divine. Each dish catered to every one of my personal tastes. Ranging from a classic Spanish tortilla (£3.95); a super salad with an array of salad choices (£5.50), through to drunken battered fish (£6.50) – if you cannot resist. Choosing what to eat was the hardest part of my vacation, but I finally decided on the Mezzy Box (£4.90). This was a cute cardboard box packed full of deli favourites like nutty hummus, baba ghanoush, salad, an excellent mix of well-cooked roasted vegetables, a tangy green olive tapenade and crusty strips of pita bread to mop everything up with.
This little box was a perfect individual portion of summer time party snacks. Each component was deliciously prepared and held its own character. My one complaint, if I have to have one, is that the baba ghanoush needed a punch of garlic to lift its taste. Aside from that, this meal was bliss.
Notably, the price range of each dish was exceptionally reasonable, and even more generous was the presence of a salad with almost every meal. In case meat-lovers may panic, burgers and steak options were also on the menu, but on one of England’s rare summer days, The Brighton Coalition has the perfect menu to break up the traditional fatty fish’n’chip seaside choices that we are accustomed to.
So sit back, soak up the sun and take in the amazing views whilst sipping on an ice cold glass of Pimms and indulge in some truly tasty fare that genuinely hits the spot.
