Kinnaird House
another reader enthuses

Editorial note: we reviewed Kinnaird House back in 1997, but we've had a lot of ecstatic emails from readers. Here is another particularly fulsome pean of praise! - March 2000

As an exiled Scot, who thinks he knows something about both his homeland and the finer hotels and restaurants of the world at large, I must doff my hat to Kinnaird surely THE finest hotel in Scotland, (eat your heart out Gleneagles!).

I had the delight of staying in one of their fine rooms last summer to celebrate my 50th birthday,on an overnight trip out from Edinburgh. The staff are marvellous in their genuine desire to make you feel at home, and yet always in a subtle and unobtrusive manner so lacking in many highly rated hotels. No stuffiness here!

Our enormous room had numerous large windows overlooking the grounds and with distant views of the river and mountains. The furnishings were delightful both in appearance, and comfort and practicality. I especially appreciated the CD player with a variety of CDs,including the alluring Land of Light. The bathroom too was massive and finely appointed.

Dinner was tastefully and charmingly presented, with excellent table spacings, settings and ambience. This restaurant is a destination in itself. The public areas and lounges are exquisitely decorated, with a massive fireplace in the drawing room whose warmth invites pre-or post prandial libations! Breakfast offers a fine selection of the freshest fruit, cereals and local fare.

I could have gone anywhere in Scotland to celebrate my big 50, but I am so glad that I came to know Kinnaird. I cannot wait to find another excuse to return, and plan a lunch party for some close friends and family there in April. Kinnaird is not cheap, but unlike many other establishments with inflated prices that flatter to deceive, it is worth every penny. Go for the accommodations. Go for the food. Go for the setting and ambience. But GO!
