The large, low ceiling dining room has industrial overtones: pewter coloured pillars, parquet flooring and a generally ‘woody’ feel that gives a wonderful warm atmosphere that was totally comforting on a dark and freezing November London night. One side of the dining-room is dominated by a refectory style banquette with no breaks which must be close to 50 feet long. Otherwise tables are well-spaced with comfortable leather upholstered chairs and candles creating a feeling of intimacy. Adjacent there is a fabulous bar with the same feeling of bonhomie.

Hawksmoor is primarily a destination for carnivores, however, if your party includes non meat lovers all is not lost as there are several alternatives on the menu to suit. This is somewhere to indulge in the wonderful British meat on offer, and if you like steak, you are in for a treat.

The menu left us in a complete quandary as there was plenty to tempt. We whetted our appetite with a pre-dinner drink, a Fancy Gin Cocktail. This was basically rocket fuel in the spirit of the classic Martini, delicious but deadly.

After much soul searching we got down to the serious business of ordering. We began with one of the specialities of the house, the Tamworth Belly Ribs. My verdict? Order them. They were succulent and moist, full of flavour and a pleasure to eat. We also chose six Cumbrae Rock Oysters which had a creamy and flavoursome bite and a freshness that felt they had been hand-picked from the seabed earlier that day. With these we had a side-order of Hawksmoor sausages which added a meaty bite to the flavours on the palate. To follow we simply had to try a steak as it is the thing to have here. This really was a question of being spoilt for choice but after a chat with our ever helpful and delightful waitress we plumped to share a Porterhouse. For those of you who are not in the know a Porterhouse is a t-bone and a sirloin steak in one and is plenty big enough for two. It came served charcoal grilled and was everything it should have been in terms of tenderness, taste and flavour. With this we had some old school proper fat chips cooked in beef dripping, buttered greens and carrots. Along with a no-doubt calorie-laden but fab stilton hollandaise and some bone marrow gravy. The lengthy wine list left me scratching my head but our charming waitress came to the rescue. She suggested a silky, velvety Sicilian red, Il Moro Nera D’Avola 2007, with woody and spicy overtones which proved just the ticket with the meaty flavours of the steak. To finish, from the choice of four puds we shared a small but intensely dense sticky toffee pudding.

Hawksmoor is like a breath of fresh air in the restaurant world. It is run by a small team who one gets the impression really care about the place, and although it is not a cheap evening out, it is one that will stand out on merit from the masses.

Louise Elgin.
