The first thing I noticed or didn’t notice about the Supperclub was its location in Nottinghill. Not familiar with the area we were surprised to find it (or not find it!) in quite a strange location hidden away on a housing estate.

It’s a good job the bouncers were outside otherwise we might never have found it! Once we had found the club, we headed straight to the bar to quench our dry throats. We settled on a bottle of Finca La Colonia Torrintes white wine, the cheapest on the menu at £20. The wine was pleasant and easy to drink although a little over priced. Arriving at 7:30pm we were told the restaurant would not be opening until 8:30pm, which was fine after all it is a supper club. However there weren’t enough seats for everybody so we found ourselves standing at the bar, waiting impatiently for the doors to open.

At 8:30pm on the dot, the doors slid open to reveal a mass of white; white walls, white floors, white beds and white lights. After standing in the dark unattractive concrete bar for an hour the brightness from the room was a little uncomfortable on the eyes. Once in the room we were shown to our bed which contained a small table. After removing our shoes we climbed on the big white bed, lied back on the big white pillows and waited patiently for the food, our stomach’s grumbling at the thought of the “feast” described on the Supperclub’s website.

We continued to wait, patiently, and after a further 30 minutes our starters were finally served. The starter consisted of 3 pieces of Smoked Salmon Sushi minus the rice with splash of soy sauce. The food was definitely quality over quantity and the salmon tasted great but I had demolished all three within seconds. Within minutes they had rudely awoken my stomach again which had given up hope and gone to sleep. Once the plates were cleared the banging dance music was turned up loud and the first act began.

A girl dressed in lace with an outfit and hat Lady Gaga would have been proud of took to the dance floor. Moving in a way to the music which I don’t think can be described as dancing, a waiter poured salt from above onto her head and into her face causing a lot of confused looks from the crowd. It was one of, if not the strangest acts I have ever witnessed. I am not quite sure what the point of the act was; maybe it was just a way to take our mind off the wait for the next course which coincidentally was another 30 minutes.

The man course consisted of a chicken breast, green bean salad, tomato salsa, mashed potato and a rich tomato sauce. The food was nice but again there wasn’t enough of it, the teaspoon of mash just didn’t cut it. Food for people who don’t actually eat food! Every table seemed to feel the same, as quick as the meal was served the plates were empty.

The next act was more of a circus performer. He balanced on wooden poles whilst spinning around with all of his weight resting on his hands. I have to admit although this really wasn’t my thing what he did was actually very impressive.

Two hours later at just after 10:30 our dessert was served. A disappointing end to a poor meal, The dessert was a brownie with a scoop of mango sorbet on top and to my surprise it was actually a normal sized brownie. However the brownie was dry and the mango sorbet did nothing complement its flavour.

I have to say I am not entirely sure what the Supperclub is trying to achieve but from the food to the acts and the beds it all feels a little too try hard. Everything is a little too random and nothing seems to work. I haven’t tried any of the other Supper Clubs so I am not sure if the London one is a cheap imitation but I certainly won’t be returning.

However I feel I must tell readers that I attended the club on a Monday night when the club had a special £17.50 deal, so maybe this is why I didn’t get the full experience although for some reason I can’t imagine it is any better and for £50 I certainly won’t be back to find out.

About Julia Pearson:

Julia Pearson has travelled the world tasting the best dishes from every continent.
