Well, when you see queues of hungry diners lining up outside of the Shanghai Dumpling restaurant, you begin to open yourself up to the possibility that such a cheap feed can really be good – so good that diners keep coming back for more and more – and more!

At Shanghai Dumpling, located in a small alleyway in Melbourne’s Chinatown you will find the place jam-packed with folk from all over Melbourne, and you will also find waiters happily and humorously serving them with the flair and finesse of a multi-tasking working mother. It seems that dumplings are waiting in the wings to be snapped up, as food is brought to your table faster than you have time to crack open a bottle of wine. Yes tables are a tight squeeze, and yes your beverages, including BYO are consumed from white plastic cups, but who needs the fancy excess of glassware when the food is so so good.

Ah yes the food. An extensive menu of dumplings ranging from your classic pork to tasty light mushroom and vegetable varieties can either be steamed or fried to your perfection. The dumplings are generously stuffed with tasty fillings – bursting with freshness, colour and texture. A plate of 15-20 dumplings will cost you less than $6 (Aus)! My advice is to order several plates of dumplings to share, and forego the traditional inclination to order a set entrée, main and desert.

Another piece of personal advice is to try to resist ordering classic dishes like pork and noodles ($7 AUS). While it sounds like a simple enough dish, it pails in comparison with the dumplings, and in all honesty, isn’t really that good. In fact it seems like basic Asian dishes are simply listed on the menu for the sake of filling out text, when it is evident that all people really want is the tasty dumplings!

So do yourself a favour, get lost in the city of Melbourne and stumble across Chinatown, where in all fairness there are many hidden foodie gems. But if you would prefer a little direction, look no further than Shanghai Dumpling, I know I will be joining the crowds outside just to have another taste.

Shanghai Dumpling
25 Tattersalls Lane
Chinatown
Melbourne, Australia

No bookings necessary
BYO
$6 (AUS) per person approx

Jacklyn Swiecicki

The light at the end of the recession-Shanghai Dumpling Our Australian Correspondent reports on Shanghai Dumpling, Chinatown, Melbourne, Australia Jacklyn Swiecicki reports: Compared to the pound, the Aussie dollar always seems like a bargain, but who thought that you could fill your belly with delicious morsels for a mere $6 – roughly 3 pounds!!!!
