However, this contemporary eatery offers less than simple Polish cuisine.

Since its opening in December 2007, The Knaypa located in the largely Polish-populated district of Hammersmith, still feeds a largely Eastern European clientele. This is a good sign.

While perusing the menu it warmed me to hear the Polish banter of locals washing downs their meals with a bottle of Polish ale, Zywiec (£3.20). A cool drink was a must, as examining the menu is quite a feat in itself. The menu options made it clear that chef Lukasz Wiolomski makes a huge effort to modernise iconic dishes whilst also catering to less-daring diners. Nonetheless, Wiolomski recognises the sophisticated palette of many of The Knaypa’s clientele by also choosing to offer posh dishes like rabbit leg stuffed with foie gras.

Opting to balance out traditional versus modern cuisine, for my starter I thankfully chose the homemade dumplings filled with sauerkraut and wild mushrooms (£7.60). Although this was actually listed as a main dish, its portion size worked better as a shared starter. Served untraditionally with a sun-dried tomato sauce, this dish worked beautifully, and the melt in your mouth dumplings were definitely the highlight of the entire meal. Another starter dish like the king prawns in a garlic and butter sauce (£11.95) was okay by comparison. The prawns were a good size, but the dish needed an extra punch of garlic.

For our main the potato pancakes with goulash (£8.95) and a large assortment of pork dishes sounded tempting, but I opted for the ‘non-Polish’ dish of pan-fried duck encased in French pastry (£14.75). This dish served with dumplings and covered in fresh cherry sauce was mediocre. The duck was so-so, and I felt that the sauce, although perfectly matched to the duck, was too sweet and overpowering for a main course.

For dessert we chose traditional apple cake and Polish baked cheesecake (both £4.80). After the amazing dumplings, these desserts were my second foodie-heaven experience. The cheesecake resembled whipped cheese beaten to perfection. The apple cake, nicely warmed, was textured with freshly grated apple and welcomingly wafting cinnamon. The presentation of these desserts was truly superior. Each dessert was served with such splendour that it truly signalled an end of meal celebration.

Notably my starter and dessert were undeniable favourites, however I genuinely enjoyed the service and ambiance that were charmingly present during my entire meal. On the whole, The Knaypa is a cosy and modern eatery that takes the best of traditional Polish dishes and reinvents them to appeal to the tastes of a multi-cultured London.

The Knaypa
268 King Street
Hammersmith
W60SD
02085632887
www.theknaypa.co.uk

Jacklyn Swiecicki

The Knaypa – The Polish Restaurant, Hammersmith, London Jacklyn Swiecicki Reviews….
