{"id":175,"date":"2007-12-03T13:08:22","date_gmt":"2007-12-03T13:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dine-online.co.uk\/foodie\/the-place-hotels-and-brasseries-gain-marine-stewardship-council-certificates\/"},"modified":"2007-12-03T13:08:22","modified_gmt":"2007-12-03T13:08:22","slug":"the-place-hotels-and-brasseries-gain-marine-stewardship-council-certificates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dine-online.co.uk\/foodie\/the-place-hotels-and-brasseries-gain-marine-stewardship-council-certificates\/","title":{"rendered":"The Place hotels and brasseries gain Marine Stewardship Council certificates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UK first as The Place hotels and brasseries gain Marine Stewardship Council certificates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Place hotels and brasseries (operated by WAW Leisure Ltd) is the first hotel group in the UK to gain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for all of its hotels and brasseries. <strong>The Bell Hotel in Sandwich<\/strong>, Kent and <strong>The Ship Hotel in Chichester<\/strong>, West Sussex have added to the certification already held since 2005 by the group\u2019s founding hotel &#8211; <strong>The Place, Camber Sands in Rye, East Sussex.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>All of the MSC certified fish on the menus (identified by the blue MSC eco-label) is supplied by the Hastings Dover Sole, Mackerel and Herring fisheries that have been independently certified to the Marine Stewardship Council\u2019s environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. <\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nDale Skinner, Group Head Chef at The Place Hotels says, <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFresh, local, seasonal and organic produce, with good provenance has always been at the heart of our monthly-changing menus at The Place brasseries. Since we started serving MSC-certified fish, there has been a noticeable increase in sales of fish at The Place Camber Sands.  Customers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of over fishing and are making their choices accordingly.  Interestingly, there is little or no cost premium for MSC-certified fish.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The MSC works to safeguard the world\u2019s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice. The MSC website &#8211; <strong><a href=http:\/\/www.msc.org target=\"blank\">www.msc.org<\/a> <\/strong> has full details of all the fisheries from around the world and details of over 1,000 products available in 35 countries \u2013 over 200 of these in the UK. All of these products can be identified by the MSC\u2019s distinctive blue eco-label. The eco-label helps consumers, concerned about over fishing and its environmental and social consequences identify and choose seafood products, which have been independently assessed and certified under the MSC standard. <\/p>\n<p><strong>WAW Leisure Group Ltd:<\/strong> WAW  LEISURE Limited opened its first hotel and brasserie, The Place Camber Sands,  in April 2003. The group specialises in revitalising, regenerating and refurbishing rundown leisure assets in an environmentally sensitive manner and  currently operates three hotels &#8211; The Bell Hotel in Sandwich, East Kent, The  Ship Hotel in Chichester, West Sussex and The Place Camber Sands near Rye in  East Sussex (all of which can be found in The Good Hotel Guide). <\/p>\n<p>The aim  is to offer stylish, yet affordable accommodation in a relaxed, informal, and  friendly environment. The company looks to recruit and train local staff and to support local businesses. Alongside the hotel accommodation are The Place  branded brasseries featuring menus based on fresh, local, seasonal and organic  produce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marine Stewardship Council (MSC):<\/strong> The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation promoting solutions to the problem of overfishing. The MSC runs the world\u2019s leading independent eco-label for wild-capture fish. It is the only seafood eco-label that is consistent with both UN FAO guidelines for fisheries certification and the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards. In total, around 70 fisheries are engaged in the MSC programme with 24 certified, 34 under assessment and another 20 to 30 in confidential pre-assessment. Together these fisheries record annual catches of over 4 million tonnes of seafood. They represent 42 percent of the world\u2019s wild salmon catch, 40 percent of the world\u2019s prime whitefish catch, and 18 percent of the world\u2019s lobster catches for human consumption. Worldwide, 1,000 seafood products from certified fisheries now bear the blue MSC eco-label.
