ENGLISH IS THE ‘NEW’ CUISINE
OF CHOICE
Forget Indian and Chinese food,
the new international cuisine of
choice is English Food! In an article
by the BBC, Caroline Stacey wrote
how UK restaurants are seeing a
revival of interest in English
food and local produce. This is
certainly the case for New Forest
restaurant The Glasshouse in Lyndhurst – which
has produced a sumptuous menu created
with produce from the local area
and are seeing customers flock
to sample the British cuisine.
In 2006 a survey was carried out
which showed that almost two-thirds
of shoppers prefer locally produced
food, as they believe it is fresher
and helps the local economy. Three
quarters of consumers also wanted
to see locally sourced food named
on menus – which is exactly
what The Glasshouse is doing with
its three course menu.
Head Chef Richard Turner says; “People
are starting to recognise that
English cuisine is just as tasty
and diverse as the foreign cuisine
we’re all used to when eating
out – it’s not just
fish and chips anymore! I have
developed a menu filled with fresh,
local, seasonal ingredients that
is prepared to a high standard
and served in a contemporary and
welcoming restaurant.”
Restaurant Manager Matt Magee
adds; “With the environment
becoming a real concern for people,
eating at a restaurant that is
helping the local economy is proving
to be a big ‘pull’ for
customers coming to The Glasshouse,
as is of course the quality of
the cuisine served”.
The Glasshouse opened in June
this year to rave reviews for Richard
Turner’s menu. Richard has
worked in kitchens all over the
world, earning him 2AA rosettes
for innovation, technical skill
and the skills to balance and combine
ingredients. Despite working internationally,
the diverse nature of British food
has brought him back to the New
Forest and to The Glasshouse.
The Glasshouse Restaurant is open
Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and
dinner. The delectable three course
set menu is £30 per head,
offering superb value for money
for the finest local ingredients
served in a contemporary atmosphere.
