Curve Restaurant & Bar, Canary Wharf, London

More Added spice at Curve.

Stephen Higginson returns for second helpings!

When we reviewed Curve at the end of last year, it was determined to establish itself as a great fish restaurant. Two things have happened since then to enhance that ambition.. A pretty new terrace on the dockside at West India Quay has been added – thus locking the restaurant more into the buzzy bar and restaurant culture of the area. Secondly, the talented executive chef - Surjan Singh - has introduced a new menu – ‘Palates of India’ - running alongside the existing offer which so entranced us on the previous occasion. Superb and beautifully balanced Indian flavours have been added to a totally fish based offer with outstanding results.

We tried the Baked Cornish Crab cakes with lemon zest, cilantro herb flavoured mixed greens and mustard yogurt sauce (£11.50) - plump, and perfect – and a ‘moilee’ ( a kind of soup) of prawns and scallops, with mustards seeds, ginger root, green chilli, snow peas and coconut milk.. This was masterly- a butter yellow concoction, velvety, sumptuous with a spicy edge.(£9.50); an outstanding and unique dish.

For mains – the clay pot simmered king prawns, with medium spiced curry leaf sauce, coriander and coconut milk, served with organics Basmati rice (£17) was another winning blend of faultless raw materials infused with spicy subtle flavours. The other main – a wonderful ultra fresh grilled Dover sole (£19.50)was enlivened, but not dominated by sesame, nigella seeds, wood smoked kokum fruit reduction plus white asparagus spears; sweet and full of character. The sides - stirfry baby egg plant with ginger and cumin and sauteed spinach with roasted garlic and red chilli were both subtle simple yet inspired. The wines by the glass- a South African Viognier Graham Beck and a French Chablis Jean Moreau (both around £6) were excellent and the service impeccable. An eating experience to be highly recommended.
